Pressure-dependent EPANET extension
In water distribution systems (WDSs), the available flow at a demand node is dependent on the pressure at that node. When a network is lacking in pressure, not all consumer demands will be met in full. In this context, the assumption that all demands are fully satisfied regardless of the pressure in the system becomes unreasonable and represents the main limitation of the conventional demand driven analysis (DDA) approach to WDS modelling. A realistic depiction of the network performance can only be attained by considering demands to be pressure dependent. This paper presents an extension of the renowned DDA based hydraulic simulator EPANET 2 to incorporate pressure-dependent demands. This extension is termed âEPANET-PDXâ (pressure-dependent extension) herein. The utilization of a continuous nodal pressure-flow function coupled with a line search and backtracking procedure greatly enhance the algorithmâs convergence rate and robustness. Simulations of real life networks consisting of multiple sources, pipes, valves and pumps were successfully executed and results are presented herein. Excellent modelling performance was achieved for analysing both normal and pressure deficient conditions of the WDSs. Detailed computational efficiency results of EPANET-PDX with reference to EPANET 2 are included as well
Toward an Astrochronology-Based Age-Model for a Messinian Pre-Evaporitic Succession: The Example of Torrente Vaccarizzo Section in Sicily (Italy)
Tectonic, paleoenvironmental, and paleoclimatic unstable conditions preceding the onset of the Messinian Salinity Crisis (MSC) highly affected marine life. Changes in calcareous plankton association are overall registered in the Mediterranean. They consist of a general transition from abundant and well-diversified planktonic associations to strictly oligotypic assemblages that precede their total disappearance at the onset of evaporitic precipitation. In this work, an accurate quantitative analysis of calcareous plankton, both foraminifers and nannofossils, has been carried out in the Torrente Vaccarizzo Section of Sicily (southern Italy). The aim is to independently define a chronostratigraphic pattern of bioevents preceding the MSC in the absence of magnetostratigraphic or radiometric constraints. The fluctuating abundance of the genus Orbulina fits well with the 100 ky Eccentricity maxima, and it is successfully applied to build an astronomically calibrated age-model for the section. On this basis, all the biohorizons have been recalibrated and discussed with regard to the previous literature. Abundant influxes of selected species demonstrated to be of local significance since they are highly affected by paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic conditions. A chronological sequence of foraminifer and nannofossil events marks the onset of the MSC with a derived age of 5.957 My, which agrees well with previous findings from other Mediterranean sections. This methodology and the new biostratigraphic events may be useful for future studies on pre-evaporitic successions of the Mediterranean
Isotope correlations as a probe for freeze-out characterization: central 124Sn+64Ni, 112Sn+58Ni collisions
124Sn+64Ni and 112Sn+58Ni reactions at 35 AMeV incident energy were studied
with the forward part of CHIMERA multi-detector. The most central collisions
were selected by means of a multidimensional analysis. The characteristics of
the source formed in the central collisions, as size, temperature and volume,
were inspected. The measured isotopes of light fragments (3 <= Z <=8) were used
to examine isotope yield ratios that provide information on the free neutron to
proton densities.Comment: 4 pages, Contribution to 8th International Conference on

Multifragmentation threshold in ^{93}Nb+{nat}Mg collisions at 30 MeV/nucleon
We analyzed the on reaction at 30 MeV/nucleon in the aim
of disentangling binary sequential decay and multifragmentation decay close to
the energy threshold, i.e. MeV/nucleon. Using the backtracing
technique applied to the statistical models GEMINI and SMM we reconstruct
simulated charge, mass and excitation energy distributions and compare them to
the experimental ones. We show that data are better described by SMM than by
GEMINI in agreement with the fact that multifragmentation is responsible for
fragment production at excitation energies around 3 MeV/nucleon.Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables Soumis \`a Nuclear Physics
Mass and charge identification of fragments detected with the Chimera Silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes
Mass and charge identification of charged products detected with
Silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes of the Chimera apparatus is presented. An
identification function, based on the Bethe-Bloch formula, is used to fit
empirical correlation between Delta E and E ADC readings, in order to
determine, event by event, the atomic and mass numbers of the detected charged
reaction products prior to energy calibration.Comment: 24 pages, 7 .jpg figures, submitted to Nucl.Instr.
Status and perspectives of the 4 pi charged particles multidetector CHIMERA
The construction of the multidetector CHIMERA designed to detect
and identify charged particles and fragments emitted in heavy ion reactions
at intermediate energy is in progress and is coming to an end. The
construction of this multidetector is presented in this paper as well as the
status of the project
